Why the focus on (functional) patents where trademarks and design patents are the greater issue in copying functional parts/assemblies?

Patents = all kinds of patents.

Mass 3D printing is just at the begining... I'm wondering whether "home printing" will get widespread - quality of 3D printing services seems to be much higher than home printers. And material selection is an issue too. Oh well... we all got 2D printers, so I guess it`s just a matter of time (:
  • 4ndy 16/12/2012 godz. 00:23
Gold, Silver, Titanium etc. are metals, and so they are redundant choices after 'Metal' is an option for a future printing material. Also you should probably have asked whether people currently have direct access to a 3D printer, which I do.

Gold, Silver, Titanium etc. are metals, and so they are redundant choices after 'Metal' is an option for a future printing material. Also you should probably have asked whether people currently have direct access to a 3D printer, which I do.

Thanks @4ndy the advise! It was an obvious mistake. I meant stainless steel not metal. I corrected it. About second suggestion: maybe in next survey I will ask about that.

Before 3d printing gets big, it needs to become faster, cheaper, and be backed by a massive open source database

Patents are publicly available so making your own shouldn't be considered piracy. I use patented techniques and technologies in many of my engineering works. Patents are in place to prevent another manufacturer (or individual) from selling the product and making money off it. Also it seems copyright and patent don't really translate to Mandarin too well! :P
